JJPerspectives – Jelmer Jeuring Photography

I was born in The Netherlands, almost in the 1980’s ;). From a young age I have been interested in photography, something I probably inherited from my grandfather. Having a camera in my hands triggers to look and allows to me see, to engage with the environment – the play between light and dark, the unlimited variety of colours in nature, the changing weather, the peculiarities of people moving around who form short, ephemeral and unplanned scenes of interest. What becomes naturally and what is made on purpose: never the same, always different.
My first ‘real’ image I took during Sail Amsterdam in 1995 with a small film camera; a backlit scene of the tallships in front of a low summer sun, peaking through the clouds. For many years photography was not more than a latent hobby, but at the age of 25 I bought my first digital SLR. From that moment, photography has been an integral part of my life and it continues to be until today.

I specialise in street photography and event photography, but also do a lot of architecture and landscape photography. Based on the feedback I get about my work, my photographic style is appreciated because of my ability to catch those vivid and expressive moments of interaction between people. This has become an important asset for photo assignments such as corporate events, workshops and other organized social interactions. A second feature that discerns my photography, one that becomes particularly visible in street and landscape photography, is the grandness of both the natural and built environment. In my work, persons often become abstract figures, dwarfed by the grandiosity of the spatial structures our world is made of. Much of my work therefore reflects a melancholic atmosphere where solitude and serendipity come together.
While I am not a Millenial, my photography style is shaped by the digital age. Whether you like it or not, the digital era has made it so much easier not only to learn by making photos yourself, with the only investments being time and perseverance, but also to read about other photographers and get access to a wealth of outstanding images made by others. These resources are an important source of inspiration and motivate me to continuously attempt to improve and challenge myself.

Please have a look at my portfolio. Let me know if you like what you see, I am always happy to receive feedback on my work!
